Wegovy is a weight loss medication delivered through a simple, once-weekly injection. Licensed in the UK since 2023, Wegovy contains semaglutide – a powerful ingredient that works naturally with your body to control appetite and reduce food intake. It imitates a hormone your body already produces, helping you feel fuller for longer and making it easier to eat less.
This prescription-only treatment must be provided by a licensed pharmacist, GP or online doctor. While it shares the same active ingredient as Ozempic, Wegovy is specifically developed and licensed for weight management.
Wegovy’s active ingredient, semaglutide, mimics a natural hormone in your body called GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1).
When you take Wegovy, it:
Controls appetite signals in the brain
Increases feelings of fullness after meals
Extends the duration of fullness
Helps regulate blood sugar levels
By mimicking your body’s natural fullness signals, it helps you eat less without feeling hungry or deprived. When you consume fewer calories, weight loss follows naturally.
Wegovy can be prescribed to those over the age of 18 who either:
Have a BMI over 30.
Have a BMI over 27 and suffer from weight-related health conditions, such as:
High blood pressure
High cholesterol
Type 2 diabetes
Cardiovascular Disease (CVD)
If you have any of the following conditions, speak to your GP or pharmacist before using Wegovy:
If you take antimalarials, other diabetes drugs, blood pressure medications, antibiotics like clarithromycin or amoxicillin, androgens, skeletal muscle relaxants, HIV medications or antiepileptic drugs.
If you have a family history of thyroid tumours
You have a history of pancreatitis
You have had a serious allergic reaction to semaglutide or any of the ingredients in Wegovy. These include swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat, fainting or feeling dizzy, problems breathing or swallowing, very rapid heartbeat or severe rash or itching.
It’s not fully known how Wegovy might affect an unborn baby or breast milk, so it’s not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding as a precautionary measure. If you’re planning to become pregnant, currently pregnant, or breastfeeding, please speak with your prescriber about alternative weight management options.
Wegovy prescription requirements will vary depending on whether you are a patient through the NHS or a private clinic:
To get Wegovy privately, you must have an assessment and prescription from a licensed UK pharmacist or GP, which will include weight management support and ongoing monitoring. Wegovy treatment is not available over-the-counter in the UK. Once you have been prescribed Wegovy, you can collect it from your local or online pharmacy.
NHS access to Wegovy is available through specialist weight management services under specific conditions. You may qualify if you have a BMI of 35 or higher or if your BMI falls between 30-34.9 and you meet the criteria for NHS services. Additionally, you must have one or more weight-related health conditions, such as high blood pressure or heart disease, and have previously tried other weight management programmes without success.
Wegovy pens follow a gradual dose increase to help your body adjust. Your treatment begins with a 0.25mg weekly injection for the first month. After this initial period, your dose will increase to 0.5mg weekly for another month. Following this pattern, the dose progresses to 1mg, then 1.7mg, and finally reaches the maintenance dose of 2.4mg weekly.
You’ll stay at that level each time your dose increases for at least 4 weeks. This careful progression helps minimise side effects, and your healthcare provider will increase each dose based on your response to the medication.

Clinical trials have shown impressive results for Wegovy. In the largest study, people taking Wegovy alongside lifestyle changes lost an average of 15% of their body weight over 68 weeks, while those taking a placebo lost just 2.4%. To put this in perspective, someone weighing 95kg could potentially lose around 14kg with Wegovy.
The benefits go beyond weight loss. Research showed that people taking Wegovy had a 20% lower risk of serious heart problems, including heart attack and stroke, compared to those on placebo. Many participants also experienced reduced waist size and improved blood pressure.
These studies, funded by Novo Nordisk (the maker of Wegovy), showed the best results when the medication was combined with healthy eating and increased physical activity.
While there haven’t been specific studies measuring month-by-month weight loss with Wegovy, we can share some Wegovy reviews from real users at Click2Pharmacy. Our patients have reported encouraging results, with some users sharing weight loss of between 7-14 pounds (3-6kg) in their first month of treatment, along with noticeable changes in their appetite and energy levels.
Here’s what some of our patients say:
“Kills your appetite, which is amazing as I’m not craving food 24/7. Lost a stone in 1 month. So much more energy to do things now. I stayed on 0.25 dose for the second month but may request 0.50 mg next month.”
“Starting to see results after one month. 7lb down, very happy with the service and the product.”
“Has helped me lose weight. About 8lb in 4 weeks.”
Remember that weight loss results can vary significantly between users. Your personal weight loss journey may be different, and you should focus on steady, consistent progress rather than rapid results.
Wegovy reduces your risk of heart attacks, strokes, and heart-related death if you have existing Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and are overweight or obese (BMI ≥27 kg/m²). It works like a natural hormone in your body, making you feel fuller and reducing food cravings. While doctors aren’t entirely sure how, the heart benefits seem to go beyond just weight loss.
Your doctor will start you on a low dose and gradually increase it over 16 weeks to minimise side effects, reaching a final dose of 2.4 mg once weekly. Wegovy works alongside, not instead of, your other heart medications, healthy eating, and exercise. It’s an additional tool to help protect your heart when you need extra support beyond standard treatments, particularly valuable for people with previous heart attacks, strokes, or circulation problems carrying extra weight.
Wegovy can be injected into fleshy areas of your body, including your stomach, thighs, and upper arms. While you can use the same general area or limb for each injection, you should rotate the specific spot to at least one finger width away or choose different body parts for each dose.
You should not inject Wegovy pens into:
Tender, bruised, red, warm or hard skin
Areas with scars or stretch marks
You’ll need your Wegovy FlexTouch pen, cotton wool or gauze, an alcohol swab (or soap and water), and a sharps disposal container. Always inject on a clean, flat surface:
Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
Choose where you’re going to inject (stomach, thigh, or upper arm).
Clean the area with an alcohol swab or soap and water.
Let the area dry completely.
Remove the pen cap.
Check that the liquid in the pen is clear and colourless. If it looks cloudy or coloured, don’t use the pen.
Attach a new needle with every dose: Tear off the paper tab of the needle cap and push the needle straight onto the pen. Turn until it’s on tight. Pull off the outer needle cap and keep it to the side, pull off the inner needle cap and dispose of it.
Turn the dose selector until you see the flow check symbol line up with the dose pointer, and hold the pen with the needle pointing to the sky.
Press and hold the dose button until the dose returns to 0. You should see a drop of Wegovy at the tip of the needle – this means it’s ready to use.
Turn the dose selector until the dose counter stops and the prescribed dose lines up with the dose pointer.
Insert the needle into your skin.
Press and hold the button until the dose counter is 0 (you may hear a click).
Count slowly to 6 while holding the pen in place.
Remove the needle from the skin.
Gently press a cotton wool pad on the site if needed (don’t rub).
Lead the needle tip into the outer needle cap without touching the needle.
Once covered, push the outer needle cap completely on, unscrew the needle and dispose in your sharps bin.
Remember to note down the date and where you injected it for your records to help with rotation.

At our online weight loss clinic, we offer different types of weight loss treatments to help you with your weight loss journey. Finding the right one for you will depend on your health history, lifestyle, and goals.
Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) is a newer weight loss injection that works in a similar way to Wegovy to control appetite and blood sugar. Recent clinical trials suggest it might even help you lose more weight than Wegovy, making it another strong option for chronic weight management.
Like Wegovy, Saxenda is an injectable weight loss drug that helps suppress appetite. The main difference is that you need to take Saxenda every day, while Wegovy is just once a week. Some people find Wegovy’s weekly dose schedule more convenient for their lifestyle.
Ozempic actually contains the same active ingredient as Wegovy (semaglutide), but it isn’t licensed as a weight loss treatment in the UK, and it can only be prescribed for treating type 2 diabetes. While the medications are very similar, they have different doses and uses.
Keep Wegovy pens and needles out of reach of children.
Before use, store your pen in the fridge between 2°C and 8°C. Once you start using your Wegovy pen, you can keep it in the fridge or store it at room temperature.
Keep the pen cap on to protect it from the light.
Wegovy semaglutide injections are not suitable for freezing.
Do not use after the expiry date.
If you think the solution is not clear and colourless, do not use it.
You can’t throw away any medicines via wastewater or household waste. In your first order with Click2Pharmacy, you will be provided with a sharps bin to dispose of your pen
